VISA MANAGEMENT FOR AUSTRALIA

408 VISA

Visas for Australia: the 408 visa

When planning to carry out activities such as attending fairs or congresses, visiting suppliers or clients, or negotiating contracts in Australia, it’s crucial to select the appropriate visa.

For business-related visits that do not involve actual labor, the 651 Visa may be adequate. However, for any work-related activities, including technical assistance, installation, or maintenance, the 408 Visa, known as the Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) visa, is required.

What You Should Know

The 408 Visa is designed for individuals intending to carry out short-term, highly specialized work in Australia. It is particularly suited for activities related to the installation or maintenance of equipment not manufactured locally.

âś… Ideal for technical assistance, installation, maintenance, commissioning, and training.

âś… Requires a highly qualified individual whose skills are not readily available in Australia.

âś… Must be applied for from outside Australia; it’s an electronic visa that doesn’t require a passport stamp.

Visa Duration

The 408 Visa is initially valid for six months from the date of issuance, providing flexibility for travel and project completion within this period.

Maximum Stay and Number of Entries and Exits

The maximum allowable stay on a 408 Visa can extend up to six months, subject to the provision of a detailed project plan and justification.

  • Generally granted for three months or less, based on the detailed documentation provided.
  • The stay is continuous; re-entry does not reset the duration.

Can It Be Extended?

Many subclass 408 visas can be extended or renewed if the requirements are still met, up to a limit depending on the category (for example, some 408 permits can be extended within Australia).

Processing Time

The processing time for a 408 Visa varies but generally takes about 22 calendar days. Due to the complexity of the documentation required, it is advisable to begin the application process 3 to 4 months in advance.

Processing Fees

The government fee for the 408 Visa is 325 AUD. Note that this fee does not include additional charges for consultation or visa service providers.
